Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused major challenges for health systems around the world; indeed, health institutions have adapted their human and infrastructure resources in order to be able to face it, and many anesthesiologists have occupied different places for the care of patients in critical condition as a result of this disease. In this context, when life-sustaining therapies do not achieve the therapeutic goals of the patient infected with COVID-19, pain management and other symptoms in the palliative care approach become an essential component of care.

Objective: This review aims to analyze the current state of research regarding the role of the anesthesiologist in the control of pain at the end of life in times of COVID-19, by considering that ache is not exclusively biological, but total, in which the social, spiritual, and emotional features of the patient are included. These professional people are not prepared in such aspects as part of their academic curriculum; so, these characteristics can provide anesthesiologists an optimal and altruistic management.

Methodology: This current work is a descriptive-theoretical research of documentary type, based on the search, organization, and review of articles about the subject. Conclusions: The benefits of adequate pain management in critically sick patients are important to preserve the patient´s dignity, as well as to improve her/his health condition. This pandemic has evidenced the need that anesthesiologists must have when training in various aspects of palliative care.
